It’s ~300km to Christmas Island from the Indonesian Mainland. It’s another ~1500km to the Australian Mainland.
Perhaps the easiest way to solve the problem of “Boat People” is to gift Christmas Island to Indonesia – assuming they want it. It really has nothing left in the way of natural resources – though it is a strategic military location.
